How to Catch Your Competition with Their Pants Down Episode 82

This week I wanted to talk about a few things that came to mind while I was driving down the road where I get some of my best thoughts. So this week I decided to record in the truck. The other day I happened to be thinking about the competition and how I could tweak my marketing a little to help get better results.
Then I thought about the follow up program the I have in place go back to the episode where I talk about increasing your business by 40% without hardly doing anything more. Well I got to thinking about a number of things but this one thought kept sticking with me. If you have a business where you have repeat business like mine lest say roof cleaning and pressure washing the pressure washing for residential can be done every year . Now let’s say that 98 percent of your competition has no follow up any campaign to remind that customer that they did business last year. Matter of fact I’d guess that that 98%of your competition only HOPES that their customer will call l for them to come out and service them.
So now let’s take you have a system that’s keeps in contact with your customer .WHY not keep in touch with his customer. Ok you didn’t get the job for whatever reason. I ‘m going to put that person on my follow up mailing campaign to send them a card basically saying, hey Mr. & Mrs. jones last year about this time you had your drive and sidewalks pressure cleaned .with all the e rain and moisture we’ve had over the last year it’s time to have it done again because if you wait too long you will also have to call your carpet cleaner because everyone is tracking in the mildew and algae growing on the walks.
Really your competition is not going think about future business form his past customers and more than likely the customer is not going to remember who they did business with last year .
Think about it what is it going to cost you may be 1.00 if you did 2 mailings 2 .00

Do you a go after a customer to get business or do you get business to get a customer? I know some are reading and saying I just want some business because the statement must be a trick question it looks the same. Let’s really break both of these statements down and see where they really lead. Yes every business needs business to be profitable and to grow with the statement going after customers to get business you are looking at your business in the short term just dollars and cents in the here and now. A transactional entity, I guess that would be ok if you have no plans or goals for future growth. And you’re thinking of your business just as a way to make an income or just money.
However if you want grow your business for the long term have future goals for growth with a predictable profitable tractable future. Let’s really take a look at the statement getting a customer to get business. Its customers that give us business, it’s the customer that you build a relationship with .It’s your customer that if treated correctly will continue to do business with your company. It’s your customer that will refer you to their friends and family. Your customer has a lifetime value how long will they stay a customer how many referrals will they send your way and how will that grow. That only depend on how you’re think about your business. Take the time to track your customers their referrals know what your average transaction is and figure out the life time value of a customer. Why let’s look at it in just dollars and cents for a minute and hopefully you will see things different if you look into the future. Let’s say for argument sake that your initial service call or sale is 100.00 and that customer purchases from you 2 times a year and the average customer stays with you for only 5 years.
So that’s 100x2= 200 x 5 years that’s 1000.00 so in reality every time you get a new customer you’re not making 100.00in sales but 1000.00 that should change your thinking a little. Many of my customer s I’ve had for 25 years and recently I was looking at the lifetime value of one particular customer that had refereed me through the years and had done business with me numerous times their lifetime value to me was $53,750.00. Every customer is valuable to me on many levels. And each customer should be valuable to you also.
So as you look at your business and its growth look to the long term and think about why you are in business.

He has one unique approach to developing his business an out of the box type of contractor marketing that he discusses rather in depth. Baby boomers the last of the big spenders retiring at the rate of 10,000 a day can that create a many new notches? More urban housing rental apartment on the rise growing from 37. Million in 2010 to 45.9 million in 2015 will it affect your market share? Or will you have to change your contracting business ? What about inflation with the government printing money how will the future look . Inflation occurs when there is free flowing money and the credit is readily available the demand for stuff goes up prices. Deflation is what happens when the opposite occurs .there is less money flowing because credit has money tightened up.
Some of the greatest fortunes have been made in declining times people understood what was going on and jumped on the train. What about your contracting business ? Some of the new niches for businesses to look at Storage accessible and efficient. Baby boomers are not moving up they are staying in place or downsizing and need more space. Security –higher crime rates spur this on Age in place aging population wants to stay at home. Shared housing – no longer the in law apartment but the graduate apartment.
Know your numbers is a 50% markup really a 50% mark up and do you really think you can make on that. Deliver a better product, inform the customer and do the proposal and sell the it on a one close . go there write the proposal give o the owner and collect a check . give them enough information that makes you r the expert and they will see the value over the price.

Of course, what’s normal is unique to everyone but my suggestion is posting an update no more than once a day to your Personal Profile Page and like/share/comment on someone else’s update no more than two or three times a day. As for your Company Page, start with maybe one post per week and after 30 days expand to two or three posts per week. SUMMARY: The secret to building a solid LinkedIn reputation for you and your company is to be helpful, humble and consistent (and not become an irritant because you’re posting too often or sales pitching too much). The One About the Customer Experience, Great, Good, Bad, Indifferent How Your Customer Sees You. Episode 77

The customer experience, great, good, bad, indifferent how does your customer see you The customer experience it’s been so on my mind for the past few days So this week I really want to take a look at the customer experiences it’s been one of those things been over the past couple weeks is sort of like been creeping at me and I'll tell you why. So here's part of what's going on I’m looking to remodel my bathrooms ny wife is looking to remodel our bathrooms I go to the Granite store suggested to me by a contractor yes I hire a contractor, I don’t work on my own house why because I love my wife and want to stay married happily married there would only be a start date. We get to the Granite store we pick out the granite and I forget to take a picture of the granite .So my wife the store nobody answers we just left the store and no answer it goes to voice mail we leave a message explaining our dilemma and ask if they would please send text a picture of the granite we just picked out so that I can go pick out tile .we are now on a mission to get everything picked out.
So for a week seven whole days we wait for someone calls back from the Granite store. You know you get busy you going to make phone calls but we never did get chance call them back so 7 days later I drive my dad to the airport and my wife calls it goes I really want to pick out go look at that granite and take a picture, can you run by there for me and do it okay. So I run out of my way to the granite store thinking less and less of why I want to do business with them because I have to go get a picture of what we picked out, now it is not there was sold but they said they can order us a new piece so that was fine and he almost cleared be real close so I get there and a Granites gone. So the girl says it went to production I can send you a copy of the picture we have to you by email I say okay do it now here's my email because I'll probably never get it if I don't so she sent an email then she says I'm going to call the production guy because if he cut it there should be a piece around and she would call me she promises me she will call so we could match up the tile wanted pick out your tile and have a nice little piece of granite with you that what she said that was 5 days ago I still haven't heard back, how much money do think that employee loses that business each year, so I went back to the yard on Sunday picked another piece of tile copied the upc code and sent it to my contractor and told him to use another granite company. Ill bet you can tell by this rant I am so fed up with them because their customer service is really ,really bad so that person lost a granite customer and anyone who knows how much granite cost it's nice little chunk of change so that was one customer experience so I'm Saturday I get into my mastermind and I'm running late and they go hey we're talking about customer experiences and I say the good or the bad so let me tell you little bit about that one but first one thing about masterminds.

So I’m in a mastermind with Pete Mitchell he's been on the podcast before he says no good, good customer experiences I have a new client who when I call her office I am impressed by the way that I am treated as just a person calling in its just a very neat experience and the person that his new customer is a real estate agent who has sold over 200 properties this year and she has another business that trains real estate assistance so she's got it down pat, how do you answer the phone, how do you talk to people how do you make them feel so you're going from bad customer experience to good customer experience and how to really make that happen. Here is the real question what is your company known for good customer experience great customer experience bad customer experience so if it's the latter if it's bad customer experience and I'm going to tell you what you're not getting ,you’re not getting a whole lot of business ,you not getting referrals, you're not getting good reviews you not getting lifetime value out of good people but if you have a great customer experience it's something that you actually have to work at its the way you answer the phone to make them feel welcome and thank you really want to talk and you really want to do business with them so it might be you have to make out a script to follow so when the phone is I answer the person answering the phone they know how to answer the phone how to talk to you how to listen to you makes all the difference in the world , my wife one of her pet peeves is customer service and the overall customer experience, and if it's not happening if she's out doing business, she's a sweet person but if she's not treated right sometimes I'm just I have to turn around walk away I feel so bad tor the person or waiter waiting on us .She owns a service business with my daughter and that is their whole business is the customer experience in the customer service their tagline is for world-class service can be yours so they live up to that and that's why their business grows this year's growing at a rate of 61% wouldn’t we all like to have that growth .She demands that people who she is going to spend money treat her like they really want to do business with her.
Sure you know how you like to be treated as a customer you go back to the businesses to treat you like you they want to do business with you they treat you like you're important a treat you like they want to take your money so that's how you need have your customers feel like they are the most important person you are talking to right now. Because they are the most important person at that time. If its not that way in your organization is there are only 2 reasons why your customers have a poor experience 1 is the trickledown effect or 2 no one is being trained and held to a standard. Only you can do that and it's a trickle-down effect and for someone in your organization they can't do that you might think about replacing them putting in someone who will treat your customer the way you would like to beach for you as a customer.
So I don't know if I can beat that one up anymore today but it's all about customer experience in the customer experience starts off with the way the phone is answered all the way to the way the proposal is presented and written to all the way to the and how the job is done and how the people are treated the way their questions are answered yes you have to answer the questions all the way to the end when you say thank you and you collect the checks and when you send them a thank you card or you learn how to wow them with by building relationships on the new product I just put out its on our resource page at www.contractorssecretweapon.com Taking your business to a whole new level WOWIng you customer while building relationship I send thank you cards from the very beginning to the very end and the gifts that I used to get them thinking about me and giving more referrals so till next week think on these things and go make a profit

This we have a special guest Thad Eckhoff and I interview him about The Huge Convention his role in the huge convention what it actually is and why you should show up at the huge convention mainly for the pressure washing and window cleaning industry and it doesn’t matter what business you are in.
We talk about why it’s great to be in business for yourself. This is not a how to event and why the convention is a little different it’s going to be about building a sustainable business. Taking Your Business To a Whole New Level WOWing Your Customers Using Send out Cards episode 75

Every day I run into contractors it can be in person or just browsing a forum looking at some crazy questions and responses Then I’ll go to face book and find the same types of crazy questions and on face book .I even get those same questions in my the same at info@ contractorssecretweapon.com.
What everyone is ultimately asking is, how do I get more business? It comes in various forms it could be as blunt and sound as desperate as HOW DO I GET MORE BUSINESS is there an easier way.
Let’s talk about what I believe is one of the best ways to get additional customers (bearing in mind you have some sort of customer base to begin with). Like I said before I like being and invited guest as opposed to being a pest that why I go out of my way to make my customer feel like they are the most important people on earth I believe in WOWING them. Wowing your customer, being different from the competition so you will get more referrals time after time this is one key to getting more repeat business and more referrals than you ever thought possible. When your customer is made to feel special they will be your sales team. How many more would you like on your sales team? It’s up to you it all depends on how or if you WOW your customer. Today we are going to talk about how Wow Your customer and build that life time relationship with your customer by implementing a relationship system using Send out Cards and the send out card gifting products. Let’s take a look at what really happens when you wow your customer and how in the long run this action affects the future of your business. Let’s break it down Today I'm going to show you how to set up a system using send out cards. I’ll give you a look at what I use the cards the wording and what gifts I send the criteria that I have put together so that it makes financial senesce of how to set up your system for communicating with your customers and how keeping in touch builds relationships with your customers for life. When I tell you that you are looked at differently by that customer you are, no longer just a service provider or a sales person you are the professional who has solved a problem and you have created a special spot in their heart. You are no longer competing on price you have a relationship.

Bonus interview with Doug Rucker New President of UAMCC episode 74 The reason we put together this pod cast is for 3 reasons 1 to introduce Doug Rucker as the new president of the UAMCC and to create a vehicle for all the members so they could have something simple and easy to pass on to someone they think should join the UAMCC and help make their businesses better.
